ATTENDANCE POLICY

A child's attendance in school is the simplest form of achieving a higher level of learning for our children.  With this in mind, we ask that you work with us in providing  your child with every opportunity for an outstanding education.

A student that has been absent has 3-days upon returning to school to present their documentation to the attendance office and is responsible for obtaining a Satisfactory admit.  Students are responsible for keeping their own admits throughout the school year

Excused Absences are as follows:

1.  Student Illness

2.  Medical Appointment that cannot be scheduled after school

3.  Death in the Family

4. Observance of religious event mandated for all members of this faith

5.   School-sponsored event or activity

6.  Other event beyond control of parent and student and approved by the principal or designee

Any absence that does not fall into one of the above categories is an unexcused absenceThis includes family vacations.

It is important to know that a note from the parent containing any of the 6 above-mentioned reasons will excuse up to 10 absences in one school year.  This note must be presented in the attendance office between 8:20 am and 8:50 am.  After 8:50 am, students will not be allowed into the attendance office and they must report directly to class.  They may bring their note the next day.  After the third day, a student’s absence will be marked as Unsatisfactory.

After 10 absences, your child is required to provide the school with documentation from a doctor, hospital, court or other legal document for the absence to be excused.  A note from home will not be sufficient to excuse the absence.  If these are not available, a Parent Administrative conference is required to excuse the absence(s).  A conference does not imply that the absence will automatically be excused.  Failure to follow these procedures will result in an unexcused absence for your child.

A student whose record reflects 10 unexcused absences in a course will receive a NO CREDIT for that course or courses.  The student may appeal the NO CREDIT, but only those students that can demonstrate proper documentation will be granted credit for the given course(s).

Thank you for your attention and support to this very important issue.

Elio Falcon, Jr.

Principal

There is probably no factor more important to successful school progress than regular school attendance. Students who are absent excessively from the instructional program will fall behind in academic achievement. Excessive school absenteeism can precede course failure.

Understand that you need to be here EACH and EVERY DAY to learn well.

When you are absent from school, you must bring a written note from your parents upon return to school, explaining the reason for the absence and the date(s) of the absence(s). The note must be given to your homeroom advisement teacher.

The attendance policy was finalized by the School Board in 1983.

The attendance rules are as follows:

A student accumulating ten or more unexcused class absences in an annual course or five or more unexcused class absences in a semester course will be subject to the withholding of final passing grades’ pending a student-requested administrative screening and/or review committee.

An attendance review committee is established in each school. The committee consists of three or more school personnel who have the responsibility to review student attendance petitions during the last week of the year and recommend the:

  • Issuing of final grades;

  • Temporary withholding of final grades pending makeup assignments;

OR

  • Permanent withholding of final grades and credits.

The following are considered excused absences:

  • Student illness;

  • Medical appointment;

  • Death in the family;

  • Observance of a religious holiday or service when it is mandated for all members of a faith that such a holiday or service be observed;

  • School sponsored event or activity previously approved;

All other absences are unexcused.

Illness at School
If someone is sick or injured at school, the teacher will send the student to the office or call for assistance if needed. The parent will be contacted, and the student will be sent home if necessary.

It is vital that the Emergency Contact Cards be kept current.

Glades Middle School does not have a nurse or clinic, therefore students will be sent back to their class until the parent arrives.

Illness at Home
If the student is ill and cannot attend school, a parent or guardian is requested to write a note give the following information:

  • Name of the person calling and relation;

  • Student’s name;

  • Grade and section;

  • Reason for absence;

  • When student is expected to return to school.

If a student is ill for more than 10 days, a doctor’s excuse is required.

The note should be turned into their homeroom teacher upon return to school. Regardless of the reason the student is absent, each student is expected to bring a written note to acknowledge the parents’ knowledge of the absence or tardiness.

Tardiness to School
When you are tardy to school after homeroom, your first period class has ended, you must report to the attendance office to sign-in and receive an Admit-to-Class pass.

If you are tardy to school during period one, proceed to your first period class where you will be marked tardy to class by your first period teacher.

  • 1st thru 2nd Offense = Verbal Warning

  • 3rd Offense = Parent Contact (by teacher)

  • 4th Offense = Referral

  • 5th Offense = Saturday School

  • 6th Offense = S.C.S.I.

Emergency Contact Cards
You will need to complete an Emergency Contact Card. Occasionally, an accident or illness makes it necessary for school personnel to contact your parent or legal guardian; therefore it is extremely important that you return these cards immediately. You may only be released to individuals listed on this card. Proper photo identification must be shown when someone picks you up during school hours. If your parents want to add names to the emergency contact cards, they must come into the school; phone calls and notes will not be accepted. All adults picking up students must be 18 years or older.

Leaving School Early

Try to arrange your doctor’s appointments and other appointments during non-school hours. If, indeed, you must leave school early ask your legal guardians to report to the Main Office/Attendance Office, where they can sign you out.

The attendance clerk will verify if the person picking you up is the identified individual on the Emergency Contact form and any other appropriate information. Once this is completed, they will issue you a “Remit to Leave School”. Please keep this form as it is also your “Admit to Class” pass for the classes you will be missing.

Makeup Work
It is YOUR responsibility to request all make-up work when absent from each of your teachers. For extended absences (three or more days), your parents may contact the guidance office to obtain make-up work. A minimum of forty-eight hours notice is required prior to picking-up the assignments.

If a student misses one day of school, he/she will be expected to take any tests and/or turn in any assignments that were due on the day of the absence on the day he/she returns. For each day absent, the student will have equivalent days to make up the work assigned during absence.

  • Students should have a homework buddy in each class who can be called for assignments.

  • These names and phone numbers should be listed in the Student Handbook.

ONCE YOU’RE HERE, YOU’RE HERE

Glades Middle School has a closed campus policy. Students must stay on the grounds from the time they arrive, even if the first period has not yet started, until dismissal. Supervision is provided from 8:30 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. Students should not be left at the school either before or after those hours.
